Outreach

Science is one of the highest forms of intellectual achievements, a testimony to human intelligence and a never ending story. As such we need to innoculate in the young generation the quest for the unkown, making available the wealth of knowledge amassed by the previous generations and challenging them with still unanswered questions. I strongly believe in the role of inspired teachers and mentors to attract young talents to the Science domain and to guide them to even brighter intellectual achievements. Only Science and Technology can lead to a better Society and this is even more true for the developing countries.

Illiteracy has to be banished at all levels if we are to fulfill our aspirations as human beings and that requires personal engagement to disseminate basic scientific knowledge to elementary and high school students, among others. Chemistry is a enabling discipline which is key to leverage technology to the benefit of Society as shown by its record of contributions over the last centuries.

Recruiting high school students from public institutions in the city of Campinas for summer and full year internship in the laboratories associated to the Obesity and Co-Morbidities Center supported by FAPESP, organizing workshops for students from elementary schools about eating habits, nutritional facts, body mass index, blood glucose and other clinical parameters as well as science fairs at public schools, visits to research institutes and museums, and science talks available on demand from public schools are some of the outreach activities carried out by Pilli´s group. Another key element relates to his engagement in the Brazilian Chemistry Olympiad: University of Campinas has started in 2009 to offer the preparatory classes for the brazilian students who will go for the International Chemistry Olympiads and this has had a big impact in the attraction of talented young brazilian students to pursue STEM carriers at UNICAMP.
